My latest book is a definite change of pace, in a bunch of ways at once. It’s called Challenge Scenario, and it’s a System Apocalypse litRPG. If you don’t know the genre, it’s a fantasy genre with a heavy game-based tilt, including levels, abilities, spells, that kind of thing.
I encountered the genre for the first time in October of 2024. I downloaded some random books while getting ready for a hurricane (as one does) and they included some litRPG. For the next ten months or so, I read obsessively in the genre. Some of the books were objectively… not good… but somehow reading about the apocalypse, and mostly reading about people overcoming the apocalypse by gaining superpowers, filled a need I had. I guess when objectively the world is not good, reading books where people get super strong and overcome their problems with magic was exactly the escapism I needed.
That said, in the summer of 2025, I got really annoyed at one book where the main character sets out to save his dog and never does. Literally, at the end of the book, he says, “Well, it’s probably too late by now. How sad.” I was SO annoyed. So I decided to write a short story about a woman who does NOT make that decision. It might be the apocalypse but she is by damn gonna take care of her dogs.
My short story did not stay short. 150,000 words later, I’m still writing. For the first time, though, I decided to turn the first book into an actual ebook. I’m only selling it via Patreon right now, at my shop there. You don’t have to become a paid subscriber to buy the book, although obviously, if you’d like to support my writing habit, that would be lovely. The book is $5, and if you’re a Kindle reader, you’ll need to use Amazon’s Send to Kindle site to get it on your app or reader.
Meanwhile, here’s Challenge Scenario:

Challenge Scenario: Thorn’s Edge, Book One
Olivia Thorne was declaring war on her bougainvilleas when the System arrived.
She missed the announcement. Her earbuds were in, her shovel was raised, and she was too busy trying to excavate a root the size of her arm to notice the multiverse welcoming humanity to its grand apocalyptic integration. By the time she looked up, a giant squirrel was attacking her dog.
So she attacked it. With the shovel.
Then a voice spoke in her head, a blue screen popped up in front of her face, and she was yanked into a 72-hour survival scenario in a monster-filled forest with 23 strangers and no way home.
In a world where mana is rewriting the rules of reality, the System wants her to fight, level up, pick a class, and earn abilities. Olivia just wants to keep herself and her dog alive long enough to get home.
A cozy apocalypse story about dogs, found family, and the radical act of caring about strangers when the System is keeping score.

I hope you’ll give it a try and I hope you enjoy it!
